-Thunk.

-How is that a word for thought?

-Thunk should be used only for the sound of something hitting the top of your head.

-Like an apple.

-Or a pear.

-Law of physics, yo!

-Imagine Newton way back in 1600-something, sitting under an apple tree, probably reading a book, and suddenly... Thunk!!

-Newton: "What the...??? *sees apple* Aha! Physics!"

-Then again, I used thunk on purpose.

-Water.

-My day is not going so swell. Waaaaah.

-But wait, what is this?? Exactly what I need!

-But where is my cake?

-Doesn't help when I have my .

-Puts me in some weird mood swings, such as from laughing, to rage and tears, and back again.

That Sinking Feeling

A few nights ago, I had a Medium-moment. You know, where you wake up with a start? It was one of those dreams where you have different things going on, like in a movie or something, and I was watching this girl who was supposed to be heading somewhere, but ended up lost in the woods. She came across this swampy area, where part of a decomposed body was already submerged in the gross water/mud, (which she, remarkably, did not take notice of).

This girl decides to try cuting through it, but ultimately, she starts to sink into the mud. She's trying her hardest to climb her way back out... Suddenly she's practically up to her chin, she's starting to choke and spit out muddy water and gasping for air, almost submerged... Aaahh!!

I think there was more after that, but I still woke up with a start.

When I was a kid, I came to the conclusion that whenever I slept facing my bedroom wall, I would have scary dreams. And I was facing my wall.

Fact#1: Dreams often signify the subconscious elements your mind is trying to broadcast to you while you're asleep. Whatever my subconscious is trying to tell me, but it certainly has a funny way of showing it! I feel like it kind of ties in with an underlying fear of getting into something (like quicksand) and not being able to get out. I base this idea from the fact that I watched horrifying movies when I was a kid that featured people sinking into swampy bogs. Nightmare inducing, I tell you.

Fact#2: We only dream of what we know. We dream of these different people we've never seen before... Or have we? Apparently our minds keep track of all the faces we've encountered throughout our lives, and for some odd reason, incorporates them into our dreams. Kind of cool, and kind of weird. I wonder if it works for places?

I wish I were able to dream lucidly. Oh, the scenerios I would create:

Cake with... Oh let's see...

Willy Wonka. In the garden.

Who suddenly jumps up, and challenges me to a duel! Which I accept, obviously.

So there we are, standing on the table, dueling it out for a good five minutes, when suddenly, in a burst of 70s technicolour....

Enters Gene Wilder's Wonka.
He is all ready and set to kick the other Wonka's ass. Challenge accepted again!

Then I decide to call... No, summon Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter over to watch. Wonka II turns to him and says in this tone...

To which Jack replies...

The Mad Hatter finds humour in this.

All the while, I sit back eating cake, and watching the action. Yum.

Wonka I and Wonka II continue to duel it out, and immediately Jack gets in on the action. The Mad Hatter grabs two forks and starts jabbing the Wonkas in the rears, laughing maniacally.

Suddenly, Wonka II kicks Wonka I off the table, and screams at him,

And further off, Edward Scissorhands is trimming away the shrubs, hardly paying attention to the action.

Then I press a button on my dress and say, "Beam me up Scotty". And off I fly! Coincidentally passing the TARDIS on my way to Buckingham Palace, where I would be meeting up the Dutchess Kate to go zip-lining... In New Zealand.

And that's just a fragment of how I would control my dreams. Funny where my posts can take me. And my imagination, for that matter.

-The idea of having an eclair is nice, but the actual thing isn't so spectacular.

Yearly snapshot of the tree

It came and went, didn't it?! Did you have a nice weekend? Over all, mine was really, really nice. My sister and her hubby arrived last Thursday from England with their adorable puppy Oliver (who we're going to be keeping for the next while), and we had our family due on Christmas Eve at our place (something we've not done before), and spent the rest of the weekend relaxing. I got so many books for Christmas, but I'm thrilled! I can't wait to read them all. (One of them was Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, the one I'm most looking forward to start.)

And two days after the fact, we got snow. Oliver got his first snow, and he went wild. It was funny. Actually, he's pretty wild in general, but we already love him for it. (Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for my other two dogs.) Such a mischievous face to match his personality!

So, that leaves us with New Years. Any plans? (Me, I'll be having a quiet night in. Or maybe not so quiet, depending on how loud we get when the clock strikes. And how whether we make our dogs bark.) Thoughts on a Friday (Chrimbo edition)

-Snow, snow, snow.

-Unfortunately, we don't have any, nor will we be getting any this weekend.

-Oh well!

-At least it's cold.

-Freezing, as a matter of fact.

-Sometimes I really want to try camping in the winter.

-I feel like I crave that absolute silence you can only get in the woods, during the winter time.

-So silent it's almost creepy.

-Wow, Christmas came up really fast didn't it?

-Turkey for a turkey.

-Chestnuts roasting on an open fiiire...

-They really do smell good when they're roasting.

-But I've never tried them.

-When I went to Rome the first time in gr. 12, I saw chestnut stands everywhere on the streets.

-And I thought to myself, "good god, they really do roast them on open fires!!"

-I must get my hands on some seasonal ice cream immediately.

-I wonder what made me think of that.

-Ham.

-Feeling carnivorous at the moment.

-I like that mug.

-Before we know it, stores will be putting up Valentine's Day stuff.

-Arrgh, I'm not ready for that yet!

-Such a nice thought of having something like flowers delivered to your door from a SO.

-I've often thought to myself, how easy it would be to type in the name of your future partner onto facebook just to see what they are up to... If we only knew who they were.

-The mighty Ludwig van Beethoven's birthday is today.
-Some powerful musik right there.
-There was a girl in my Italian class a few years ago who was studying to be a music conductor.
-What a neat profession that would be.
-For some reason, I'd always had this idea that a career in the classical music field would be something wonderfully classy, full of professional concerts, musical celebrity introductions, after-parties, etc.
-But that idea, of course, is not usually the case. Especially the latter half! (Well, maybe sometimes.)
-And lots of practicing. Always important.
-I'm covered in dog hair; I need a lint roller or something.
-Boogy woogy Santa Claus.
-Sugar cookies sound lovely right now.
-I used to post recipes on here; what happened?
-Life would be my answer.
-Sugah cookeh.
-I think I smell a meme coming...
-How these people discover these things is beyond me.
-But I likes it.
-Hey hey, there's a vote on for the worst Christmas song ever!
-Hands down "Grandma Run Over by a Reindeer".
-Makes me wanna shoot myself whenever I hear it on the radio.

Some may find this offensive, but I find it hilarious. He is pretty much spot on for when it comes to women of this day and age! Right down to the facial expressions and body language; I'm pretty sure I know girls like that (if not act like that myself occasionally-har har). I can't quite put my finger on it, but his character reminds me of someone... Or someones.

Return of the King

Around this time of December back in 03', The Return of the King made its widely awaited premier in theatres. Remember?? Man, that was exciting! At my school, people actually skipped class to go see it on its opening day (how I wish I was one of them, had it not been for a test that day). I've been thinking about the movie a lot lately, so I guess it's just the time of year that I feel the urge to watch ROTK (or any of them!) one more time. (And ahhh my god, it won't be long til The Hobbit* comes out! Eeeeee!)

Songs that Remind Me

Over the past four years of university especially, there are a few songs that are reminders of particular moments of where I was and what I was doing at the time. They were the songs I worked to at my desk, to drown out noisy neighbors, and to relax myself at night when the thoughts of work and tests kept me awake. I would associate them with the seasons, and what I was obsessed with at the time. Ahh, memories!

1. The Painted Veil Soundtrack. Listened it during my first year, and especially adored this track.

2. Dreaming of You, by the Corals. It reminds me of March (first year again), for some reason. And this commercial, which I actually like better than the original.
3. Lily Allen. When I think of LDN I think of spring, and the end of exams. And funny enough, The Fear reminds me of the end of my second year!
4. Philip Glass. I can't get enough of his music! The Hours, Metamorphasis, Glassworks. Minimalist perfection! Once you hear his music, there's no turning back.
5. Rain. And thunder. Perfect for drowning out the stupid noisy neighbors above.
6. The Beatles. But that's a given.
7. This is gonna be a bit weird, but Goodbye Lenin. Reasons unknown. I just liked it. At 5:00 in the morning once I was finishing up a death essay, and I played this song as I concluded it. It made me feel... Triumphant. (And I gave the movie three stars)
8. Mika. I listened to this often, and I danced to this for a ballet performance once.
9. This song will forever remind me of Lost, even though I heard it long before university.
10. Ella Fitzgerald. Usually while walking or on the bus.
11. Jesus Christ Superstar. Another... Odd late night work song.

Friday Contemplations

-Feeling a bit chilled.
-Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
-I vaguely remember that tv game show.
-I'm pretty sure I always wondered why Carmen never made an appearance.
-Adds to the intrigue.
-I hear Jennifer Lopez is being considered for the role.
-I personally don't think she'd be such a bad choice.
-In fact, I think she'd be rather good. Given the fact that Carmen barely makes her presence known in the show, til the end.
-Go ahead, throw eggs at me for thinking that.
-I would watch this for sure.

-Maybe Waldo's hiding out with Carmen.
-We got our new tree placed in our front yard.
-All limbs and twigs right now, but someday it will become a leafy green giant.

-By the time it grows really tall, I'll probably be driving my kids back to show them the house I grew up in.
-This is kind of cute, but it does make you wonder.
-It looks like the beginnings of some creepy/romantic movie with a glowing pillow.
-Wherein her SO had passed away the year before, and one night as she was crying into her pillow, it would start glowing.
-Creepy, yet comforting.
-I would like a glowing pillow.
-Remember those stuffed animals whose tummies would glow after rubbing them or something?
-They may have been Carebears.
-I remember a friend from when I was young used to have one of these, and she kept it in her freezer, because it would glow better or something.
-I think.
-The glowing pillow also reminds me of what could be a Harris Burdick (again!) story.
-All stemming from the image of a woman about to carve into a glowing pumpkin.
-Halloween?
-It's November.
-Another month closer to Christmas.
-Closer to snow, closer to home.

It took me four and a half wild years...

But I did it! I graduated from my university as of last weekend. And my my, what an adventure it was. I was handed my long awaited diploma (thankfully without the jaunty tasseled hat), and later on I took a trip to (gasp!) Cape Breton and saw some spectacular fall scenery, which I mentioned last year, as a matter o'fact. Even with the very long drive to and from, it was worth it--though next time doing it in two days instead of one would make better time to see more of it.

Other highlights would have included....

-Visiting my best buddies!

-Attending what can be considered probably the most graphic human sexualities class there will ever be.

-Having a hotel room to myself for a few nights before my parents swooped in.

-Listening to a Dean read for an hour from a long list of tricky names to pronounce, only to take an enormous sigh of relief after taking his seat again.

-Nearly making roadkill of a moose (but didn't, thankfully!).

-Sitting next to a vivacious older lady after the stop-over to Halifax.

-Having an extra seat to myself before that.

-The weather. Always the weather.
-A... McLobster sandwich??

Thoughts during a September long weekend

-A day at the Ex is the best.
-I come home at 9:00 last night with tired legs, tired feet, tired eyes, and yet I am happy.
-I haven't gone in years, and it has not changed much in glitz, glam or technology.
-Yet that's what makes it such a familiar and reassuring place to return to at the end of the summer every year.
-I love wandering around the pavilions, watching the rides go and the many, many people that come.
-The food... Oh, the food.
-Even if you're not hungry, the smells of cotton candy or burgers are ridiculously tantalizing.
-I had my first, and probably last, experience of trying deep fried butter.
-That's right, you read that correctly.
-Over all, it was not bad, but not something I would go for again now that I know what it's like.
-I've wanted to try it since they first introduced it two-ish summers ago; thus, if you're going to be at the CNE or whatever fun fair there is, eating unhealthy is the thing to do.
-I just hope I walked off all the calories from it! Ha.
-This year, they introduced deep fried cola syrup.
-Thanks, but no thanks.
-Speaking of food: I decided if I ever visit New Orleans, this is among the places I will be visiting.
-All in lieu of the show Kid in a Candy Store.
-Which reminded me that I saw Duff Gordon (Ace of Cakes dude) while I was at the Ex! It was unreal.
-I wanted to hear him laugh.
-I saw plenty of piglets when I visited the animal building, and they were absolutely precious... Even when asleep.
-Speaking of which, awww.
-I think it would be just about this time when I'd be heading back to Halifax to start yet another school year.
-Feels... Odd.
-What an unusual summer it has turned out to be.
-Does that mean it will be an unusual fall?
-Change is definitely in the air; it's blowing in on the September breeze like Mary Poppins blowing in on the West wind under her umbrella. (Or is it East?)
-"Practically perfect in every way."

Back to School: Part II

Ok, university/college folks--your turn. But first things first: congratulations, you made it! Pat yourself on the back, this is your first gargantuan step towards independence. The first year can be rather daunting, but if you could handle high school, you can handle pretty much anything. And besides, it's a lot of fun! So here's my list of dos and don'ts for helping you get through.

Do bring lots of pictures from home. Unless you have a soul of iron, homesickness will strike at any given time in the first few weeks. When that happens, it's best to just let it roll and pass over; if it makes you feel better, talk to someone. If you don't know anyone well enough, talk to an RA; they're pretty nice and will always be glad to listen.

Do get to know the people on your floor. They're the first people you've introduced yourself to here, so why not?

Don't be an obnoxious drunk... At least to the best of your abilities. That includes respecting your neighbors with the noise levels and behavior. (Some idiots in my residence decided set off the fire alarms a few times during study break. In the dead of winter. Grrr.)

Do buy yourself a good pair of headphones. Neighbors will be noisy (like above), and you need to study. Otherwise, take advantage of the library where it is quiet.

Don't be a sloppy drunk. Nobody wants to walk through spilled beer in the hallways. Or worse: barf. ***Even worse: some RAs have rules to make you pay a dollar for it and clean it up yourself.

Do go out in decorating your room! I loved picking out stuff like posters and and bed spreads and what not. Hey, if you're going to be living there you may as well make the best of it. (Very good practice when you're living on your own one day)

Don't set fire to anything in your room. In most residences, candles or anything with an open burner is not allowed. But that's a given... Riiiight??

Do try to keep up with your readings. There's lots, but it will pay off in the end.

Don't go to class when you're sick. Really, it's not worth it; especially if you feel like crap and don't want to be there anyway. If anything, borrow someone else's notes the next time.

Do double check your alarm before going to bed on the eve of a midterm or exam. There's nothing more arousing than the sheer panic of waking up 5 minutes before that morning test is about to begin. Otherwise, set your alarm on your phone. And double check that!!

Don't lose your head when shit happens (like the previously mentioned above). Fear not, it will all work out in the end one way or another!

Do take part in activities around campus. It's a lot of fun, you make friends, and it's a good distraction from school work. (I was part of the Dal dance society myself.)

Do get to know the area around your campus.... It will be your home for the next four years (or more!). Likely you'll find some awesome little places to explore and revisit, like cafes, shops, pubs, etc. It will be these places you'll miss most when you're finished.

Do be careful with your belongings, such as your computer (especially in public). If you're in the library, you don't want to go off for a book and leave your stuff at a desk (even in the stacks), only to come back and find your things missing. Take your stuff with you before you go off!

Do back up your work with a USB drive. Your essays (and your life!) will be saved by that darling little insert if your laptop decides to kick the bucket at the last minute. And especially...

Do embrace university or college life. You'll never experience anything like again it afterwards! It will probably be the most exciting time of your learning experience (albeit with ups and downs), and you'll leave with plenty of good memories. Not to mention it will have changed you as a person in the best ways possible.

It's almost September, and you know what that means! School days have arrived yet again! Or are about to. In light of the grand occasion, I thought I'd dole out some things I learned (and wished I learned!) back in the not-so-very-long-ago day, that could possibly help. I thought I'd start with the high school scene, then do a college/university post later on. Whether you're a newbie, somewhere in-between, or about to leave the coop kind of student, there are things everyone should probably get to know. It took me time to learn these things, but I did eventually, and here I am writing about it! Hopefully without the preachy or "we buh-lieve in yoooou!" cheesiness.

People can surprise you. Just when you thought the most popular girl in school (do they still go by that?) was the snarkiest of them all, you stand behind her in the lunch line, start talking, and it turns out she's actually pretty nice. (Unless, of course, she actually is snarky.) Or even the punk kid, who you thought was, well, a punk. You never know, they just may end up being your friend... Or your worst enemy. (Kidding.)

Don't be afraid to shoot the breeze. I myself was "the quiet one" in the beginning (I kid you not), and often had a tough time getting to know people (and vice versa). So you whaddayado when you're feeling shy**, or at a loss for words when the situation arises? Start with a simple compliment. Then progress on the topic, and ask other simple, not too personal/creepy questions about them. (People like talking about themselves.)

It's worth taking part in school activities; plays, sports, leadership stuff, whatever. That's what makes HS so fun and memorable! For me it was music, and being part of the school symphony (2nd violin, baby!). Had the best times in symphony, not to mention we played the best music.

Do your homework. Nuff' said. (If you think it's bad now, you haven't experienced college or university.)

Get sleep. Lots of it. You need it!

A positive attitude helps considerably.

You just might surprise people. Just when people thought had labeled you correctly, BAM! Out of the blue comes something so unexpected, others can't help but be awed. Who said we had to fit into labels? Go beyond that! You have a lot more awesome in you than you think.

Ms. Frizzle said it: Take chances! Make mistakes! Get messy! (And I don't mean those kind of chances, fool!) If anything, take a bold step out of your comfort zone and just go for it; you're not under the microscope as you may think. And if you make mistakes... You learn from them! End of story.

You don't have to have it figured all out. Things will be confusing, but that's normal.

Express yourself as much as you can. It kind of goes along with the point above, but this is the time of your life where you are figuring out what you like and who you want to be. You're your own person! That being said, there's nothing wrong with going along with some stuff you're friends like and do, and it's not always easy to go against the norm. But what about the stuff you want to do? Sometimes you have to put aside what everyone else thinks and do your own thing. And most importantly....

High school isn't the end of things. It is not! It is merely a passing phase in your young adult life where the learning process picks up pace (and where people get considerably more judgy). Whether it's been the best or worst damned years of your life yet (or if you have no idea because you're just starting), there's so much more beyond that. Many more opportunities for you to leave your mark elsewhere. Even afterwards, you'll continue to evolve, and you won't be the same person you were back then.

-This past Monday, Canada lost a truly remarkable figure.

-As somebody else said, "the greatest PM we never had".

-That's so true. He had such vision for changing the country for the better, and a great sense of humor.

-He really could have become PM.

-I never heard of a leader that earned so much respect from the public in life, and even more so in death.

-I think pretty much everyone liked him, whether they voted for him or not.

-I wish I had met him.

-Until this year, I was crossing paths with politicians.

-Starting with Jean Chretien in 2008, when I was heading back to Halifax after reading week.

-He was waiting in the airport lounge, not doing much.

-I was sitting a few seats over, otherwise I probably would have taken his picture.

-Which would have been a not so subtle move.

-"Say poutine!!"

-And then he was sitting in the front of the plane, heading to Ottawa, which was the stop over, so I got an even closer view when I got.

-And of course, I was sitting about eight seats behind.

-Then there was Elizabeth May, as part a sustainability conference (which included Jian Ghomeshi and Raffi!!!).

-She made a nice diss about the male politicians she was up against, which made the audience laugh and go "ooooohhh".

-My next crossing was with Michael Ignatieff, when he came visiting Dal for a chat with the students.

-While waiting in line at the Tim Horton's in the SUB building, I saw him head into the building with his entourage and upstairs.

-This year I was hoping I would cross paths with someone, but that sadly did not happen.

-Maybe next year?

-Or maybe tomorrow.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful, and optimistic. And we'll change the world.

A Bit of Monday Wisdom...

Wow... I totally love this one! It just goes to show that everything possibly does happen for a reason, and for the better. From this lovely lady.

It will happen later. His best friend will ask you out instead. You’ll be kissed in the movies instead of on a beach. You’ll end up going to a different school because the one you thought you’d get into didn’t work out.

She’ll move away. Someone else will move in next door. She’ll be a little weird at first, a little more shy, but ultimately really good at riding bikes and playing dolls.

That part you always wanted will go to that other girl instead. And you’ll rock it out in the chorus like your life depended on it. Because on some level it does.

The road you were going to take will be flooded and closed. The inn where you were going to stay will be under renovations. He’ll be taller than you thought. And have a funny accent. But will be a good kisser nonetheless.

You’ll get a flat tire on the way to that crucial meeting and end up peeing your pants laughing with the gas station attendant over a copy of Us Magazine. And someone else will fill in for you because they always do.

You won’t get that dream job like you thought you would. It will go to someone else with far less creative drive and vision than you. Someone far better suited for a cubicle than you.

You’ll be put in groups with people who put your panties in a wrinkle. You’ll sit next to someone on the plane who you’d never talk to except that they won’t shut up … and you’ll end up staying in touch for years and taking family vacations together.

Five years after you graduate, life won’t look anything like you would have imagined. You’ll be single when you thought you’d be married. You’ll have kids when you thought you’d be in the Peace Corps. That trip to Laos will get delayed because you’ve got to stay home and take care of your grandmother. Laos will be there. You’re grandmother won’t always.

He’ll move overseas and oddly the Atlantic Ocean between you will bring you closer than you ever dreamed possible. You won’t get engaged, married, or pregnant when you thought. You’ll miss the bus/train/plane/ferry that you thought you just HAD to be on.

You’ll fall off the turnip truck. You’ll jump on a different bandwagon than you intended. You’ll get fired when you thought you ought to be getting hired.

You’ll realize you forgot the outfit you had planned to wear and that the shoes are all wrong now that you have a full-length mirror to see the whole outfit. Your shirt will be wrinkled and you’ll spill red wine on your white jeans.

Your dog will eat your five-year plan. You’ll drop your Blackberry in the toilet (at least once). Your computer will crash, and you’ll delete the first draft of your magnum opus. You’ll accidentally delete your hard drive and end up with a clean slate.

You’ll show up late to the date with the guy you were sure was going to fit into your husband suit and realize he’s less than graceful under stress and not so flexible (better to know now than later).

When you thought you’d be baking pies and living behind your very own white picket fence you’ll find yourself doing something so entirely different you couldn’t have even imagined it a year before. There will be moments when you’ll look around and not even recognize your own life … in a good way.

You’ll take a wrong turn and end up in an entirely different city than you intended. You’ll dial the wrong number and end up in love with an entirely different person than you intended.

You’ll flunk out and end up taking five years instead of four to graduate. You’ll have your heart broken when you were sure you were with the one and then meet the other one a month later. You’ll move to a new city to start a new business with those perfect new business partners and then it will all go to shit. And you’ll move across the country again only to realize that that’s where you belonged the whole time.

You’ll drive as far away from home as possible thinking that it will make you feel free. Then you’ll get homesick and drive back four months later because you suddenly feel trapped.

You’ll imagine the open road, country music playing loud, you singing at the top of your lungs and flirting with a new man in every town. And then you’ll invite someone to come with you on a whim and realize driving around the country by yourself was a terrible idea anyway … and that it’s way more fun when you’re traveling with someone you love.

You won’t do it at the right time.

You’ll be late.

You’ll be early.

You’ll get re-routed.

You’ll get delayed.

You’ll change your mind.

You’ll change your heart.

It’s not going to turn out the way you thought it would.

It will be better.

-Had my last exam today, and the freedom is overwhelming.
-First thing I plan to do this weekend is take more pictures.

-Randomly watching Merlin on tv right now--I'm sorry, but the person who voices the dragon is almost laughable.

-I think I should reread The Mysts of Avalon.
-Dumbass moment of the day: In the subway station, when I was paying for some subway tokens. I decided to go through the gates, all the while looking for the slot to drop my token through. Turns out, it was in the box by the window, and I was already halfway through.
-People behind me and all.
-HURDURRR!
-Priceless.
-And the last picture reminds me of... Remnants of the TARDIS VORTEX.
-Or, to put it more simply, fairy dust.
-Now I have on this other show called Haunted Collector.
-I just want to smack my head against the wall.
-The investigator asks, "Do you have any particular items in this closet besides clothes?"
-And the home owner's like, "Oh, I just have this old bayonet from from the Vietnam war..."
-And I'm just like, WELL DUH IDIOT NO WONDER YOUR HOUSE IS HAUNTED.
-Not to mention there were frickin giant shark jaw bones hanging in the kids' bedroom, scaring them to death.
-Then there was this previous place they were at, and the investigator was asking this woman how her uncle had died, and she said, "he was murdered".
-The look on his face was incredulous, on the brink of "bullshit." But then he answered, "Reeeally?"
-It just made me laugh.
-Dear Josh from Destination Truth: please come on this show, call BS on them and laugh in their faces.
-Then laugh in the family's faces for being idiots in their poor taste in antiques.

Or, I'd find myself writing like this: I dream of you in purple light. I still taste the tart raspberries on my lips, and the red stain from which one fell on my pristine white shirt, stands out like a bright red ruby. The bare tree branches stand out above me like ancient bony fingers in the crisp fall air, as if they want to grasp me from the sidewalk and curl me into their hands forever. Their hands remind me of you.

-I can't believe it's already August.
-What happened to June?
-Before we know it, it will be September, then October, then... I shall not go on.
-Shit, I'll be 22 in a little over a month.
-The very idea is jarring.
-Even more so than when I was on the brink of turning 20.
-22 seems like such an awkward age.
-The highlight of my day came yesterday afternoon when I was walking by some open grassy area on campus; the was a hedge in the middle, and as I was passing, this little boy was running around and he found a gap under the hedge that he could crawl through to the other side. Or thought he could, anyway. I kept turning around to look at him to see if he would come out the other side, but he didn't, and I could only see the bush rustling! There were other people walking around who were witness to this, and one guy in particular going opposite my way was watching him too, and grinning. As we passed, we kind of looked at each other and just kind of laughed at this kid. It was just a really funny moment.
-How awesome is it to connect like that with a stranger?
-Very.
-I found this the other day through Cup of Jo, and now I really want to try this with the next little girl I meet.
-I love the eighties and its paraphenalia.
-I was so close hanging around with it before 1990.
-Out of nowhere I started watching Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and suddenly my adoration for Michael J. Fox has be re-ignited. (Speaking of which, the first pic up there is from Back to the Future I)
-Not to mention that movie is actually hilarious, and wonderfully dark in comparison to most of the Disney movies I've seen.
-And surprisingly adult in its humour! I love it.
-Just another week of school.
-Then exams.
-Then... That's it.
-Seriously.
-I would have never thought I'd be spending this summer in school.
-I thought I would be working at this point and making cash.
-"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it"
-Darn right it does, Ferris.
-Iced coffee.
-Iced Caramel Macchiato.
-"Hello! I must be going! I cannot stay, I came to say I must be going. I'm glad I came, but just the same, I must be goiiing!"
-In my case, back to essay writing.

The best summer movies (according to me)

I'm currently taking summer courses, as I have previously explained. That means less time for doing stuff such as going out (other than down to St. George campus!), staying up late, and having a proper dinner two nights out of the week. Either a Tim Hortons something or leftovers at 10.00 at night. Boo. But I digress--back in the day (meaning in the throws of childhood) when I did not have to take summer classes (well, excluding gr. 3 and gr. 6) and I roamed freely wherever and whenever (half the time), there was nothing like settling down in the nighttime with a good movie and pile of junk food (bring on the licorice and popcorn!). My list of best summer range from the campy to the deranged and creepy. More so of the former, thankfully. Without further a-due, here are my top summer movies, in no particular order:

Now and Then. Ahh, a quintessential coming-of-age 90s summer movie, set in the 70s. You get the best of both worlds.
The Great Outdoors. When I stayed up at my grandparents' cottage during the summers, we had to watch this film it was tradition to watch this film.
Jaws. Enough said. Just don't go for a late night swim afterwards or you might make yourself paranoid.
Sleepaway Camp. Again, be wary of when and where you watch it. (Paranoia, paranoia paranoia figaro.)
Camp Nowhere. No no, not another horror, but a fun romp of a 90s' camp movie for kids. (Spoiler alert: Did I mention Ben Stiller is in there somewhere? Oh wait never mind, I'm thinking of the Heavy Weights, another 90s camp movie. Something I never saw/heard of until a few years ago, as a matter of fact.)
Indiana Jones. ANY Indiana Jones movie. My personal favourite is The Temple of Doom. (You'll see why.)
Speaking of Harrison Ford, Star Wars!
And speaking of Star Wars, Star Trek! The newest movie, that is. My friend and I usually make a point of seeing a good new action flick every summer, and this was one of them a few summers ago. I still consider it a good summer action flick.
The latest? X-Men First Class. So darn good! (And James MacCavoy? 'Sigh'.)
For some reason, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids comes to mind.
As does Honey, we Shrunk Ourselves.
I can't believe I'm adding this... but Mamma Mia. It makes me think of Greece, which makes me think of sunshine, which makes me think of warmth, which makes me think of summer... which makes me think of Abba. There you go.
Matilda (1996). Remember that? I'm pretty sure I watched this every summer til I was about ten. Love it!
Back to the Future I and II (helloooooo Michael J. Fox!).
The Karate Kid (hellooo Ralph Macchio!).
And to close off... Roman Holiday. It's cute, funny, and set in Italy (Audrey+Gregory+Italy=love). What's better than that??

Wishful Thinking Friday

-Good afternoon, doves! Surviving the heat?

-Summer courses have been keeping me occupied lately, so if you're wondering why it's been quiet around here, that's your answer.

-Speaking of which, I have a midterm next Tuesday.

-Heat dome, they've been calling it.

-Missing winter yet?

-Here in the Big Smoke, it went up to about 37 point something.

-Of course, the forecaster's predicted record breaking temps.

-What is with my spelling lately??!

-I can't spell, it seems.

-I boob the simplest words when I write or type.

-Of course, it's impossible to tell here because I delete my mistakes and my sentences look flawless.

-Arrrghh.

-Good lord it's been hot outside.

-Was it worse last summer? Can't remember.

-I think Toronto's going to hell in a hand basket.

-If we haven't gotten there already, hehe.

-Unless you're absolutely in the mood for being scared (and I mean absolutely), watch this and tell me you weren't freaked by it.

-I found those videos again, and I think I've started something dangerous.

-This made me laugh the other day. But not necessarily snort.

-Brickbreaker: apparently I suck at it. Amongst other things.

-My dream for cake came true this week!

-Then again, I am in a perpetual state of wanting cake.

-I should start writing like this girl.

-So, there's a giant statue of Marilyn Monroe in Chicago, doing her classic Seven Year Itch pose.

-You know that she was beaten up by her then-husband Joe Dimaggio afterwards?

-Pretty sick that he beat her up for it, yes, but it's also pretty sick that the person who designed the thing did it purposely for people to look up her dress.

-I don't know much about her, but I feel pretty bad for how she was treated in life, and how she can't seem to catch a break in death either.

-Meet the lady with 700 cats.

-Can I take one home?? Pleasssie?

Well, it would seem that school has started (AGAIN) as of last Tuesday, so things will be a little more subdued around here than it has been in a few months. I'll be taking some summer courses here in the Big Smoke, so I can graduate in the fall. What's worse is that I can't even work the internet when I'm down on campus!! Very frustrating, but I guess I can make up for lost time by reading and wandering. Other than school, here is what has been keeping me occupied lately:

-Slightly shorter hair. (I always love a hair cut.)

-Pyschology readings; so far so good. It's quite interesting, and for once the readings aren't so boring that my attention span drifts in and out. That's a good sign.

-Visitors from England (not the Royals as they are in LA now ho-hum, but a married sister which is just as exciting).

-Brickbreaker. So addictive, and yet I can't even make it past level four.

-Iced coffee. Another addiction I've developed over the week.

-Americano. Thanks for introducing me, SYTYCD. And now, I have her cd.

-Real Simple: pretty much everything I could ask for in a magazine.

-When I'm in a 1940s mood I go here. I love this movie!

-Torchwood. I finally bought the first series, and the new series Miracle Day has started up!!! Eeeee! (And for the record, I loved it. LOVED IT.)

Thoughts on a Canada Day Friday to Carry me into the Loooong Weekend

-Britain's bebeh, all grown up.

-Oh, Canada. How far you have come from 144-odd years ago.

-Sure, there are a couple things I dislike about you politically speaking, but generally you're incredible for what you are, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

-And yes, I'm speaking to a great inanimate entity.

-What ho, Kate and William are here!

-Somewhere out there in Ottawa, but I feel your presence from where I sit none the less.

-I wish I were in Ottawa right now, though.

-Or wherever they plan to go this weekend.

-Random Canada fact: Lacrosse is our national sport. Not hockey.

-It doesn't feel like it's a Friday.

-And yesterday didn't feel like it was a Thursday.

-I walked around too much yesterday.

-In flats.

-By 6.00, I was ready to collapse.

-Random Canada fact #2: Our national animal is the beaver. I don't think we have a national bird yet.

-If we did, I think it would be the Loon.

-BEAVER LOVE!

-When did Ann Brashares come out with a new Sisterhood book??!!!

-I must get my hands on this immediately.

-Or, as soon as I finish the other books on my list that need reading.

-Eventually I plan to tackle Anna Karenina.

-But likely not for a while.

-Classes start next week--yay or nay??

-Driving.

-More often than not, I have dreams wher I'm driving along somewhere and I'm afraid I won't be able to slow down the car in time before the stop sign.

-But I do!

-Maybe it's a sign that I'll be a fab driver.

-At least until I get past my the crippling fear of not knowing what to do once I'm on the road.

-Hide and seek with Maru.

-I love.... Lush. I love Lush.

Friday Musings

-Oh my goodness, I found this earlier in the week; I laughed so hard, and still do if I watch it, but I'm also a little freaked out.

-I wanted it to rain earlier this week, and it's raining today. YES!

Thoughts on a Friday to breeze me into the Weekend

-We made it to Friday!

-Not sure if food should be an option right now.

-But if I'm hungry....

-May as well.

-Bring on the bagels and cream cheese!

-Apparently I really stink at playing RST.

-A game in which you start with a word (like cake) and someone else comes up with another word that is relevant to it (like fork).

-However, the words can't start with R, S, or T--this is what brought me to my demise.

-It is times like these I wish I had more wit.

-On the bus the other day, a young girl with her mom and slightly older brother were sitting a few seats over.

-The two of them were adorable, but the little one was a ham!! She was wearing a cap on backwards; she would turn it around on her head and cover her face with it, then whip it off as if she were about to take a bow. Of course being a little kid, she was looking for the attention. I decided to humour her and subtly make some funny faces for her (as subtle as one can be while surrounded by other people on the bus).

-She seemed to like it!

-Ahh, a list of people's top ten favourite words.

-Ok, how about a list of people's least favourite words??

-Finally getting a new pair of glasses!

-They're black out the outside, ivory on the inside.

-I don't know how I came across this, but I like it.

-I wish I could be that dramatic and sing out my problems in everyday life.

-Much like wanting to go around speaking in a foreign accent to see how strangers take it.

-Aw, I want to do my nails like this!

-I am very 'wanty' today.

-Would you like some cheese to go with that whine???

-I tend to use that when others complain.

-There was a hawk in the front yard earlier this week, and I missed it because I was upstairs.

-There were also ducks in the pool about a month ago, and I missed that too because I was out of the house.

-Bah.

-But then again, I saw a chipmunk by the bird feeder, and chipmunks are rare in this neck of the woods.

Rhubarb-Apple Crisp

The artsy thing I usually do is take a fancy picture of the dessert by itself on a plate in a half attempt at food photography, but I only remembered to do so after I ate mine (with whipped cream. Always. Though of course it is just as tasty without). Instead, I leave you with a full view of the baking dish, with the a scoop taken out of it. Not so artsy--le sigh.

Why, it's a new recipe at last! And a crisp one, no doubt. More often than not, when I bake, I tend to put my own spin on whatever it is I make. Meaning, I don't exactly follow it to a tee' (usually combining different recipes together). For this crisp I made on the weekend, I followed this recipe, but as I didn't have enough rhubarb to make six cups, I just added chopped granny smith apple (about two apples worth) to fill however many cups I needed. I also made it with quick cooking oats rather than rolled, which I found didn't make too much of a difference from its counterpart. But just in case, I just let it bake for 40 minutes.

And it worked! In a food critique-y way so to speak, it made for an excellent tart/sweet combo. Not to mention I loooove the crunchy topping that goes on top. On any crisp, for that matter. I've never baked with rhubarb before; a family friend gave us a bunch of it, so I decided to put it to good use. And good use it was.

-My favourite time of the day is still the morning.

-The smell of coffee.

-Cream going into coffee is a wonderful sight, as demonstrated in the picture above.

-Even milk going into tea.

-I can't drink coffee straight just yet, but maybe someday I will.

-In the meantime I'll be sticking with my lattes and cappuccinos.

-Which are more interesting, if you ask me.

-Speaking of mornings, guess who's going to be up at the (ass)crack of dawn just to see Pirates 4 this Saturday? (hahaha, I love that term)

-Aww, the lil' Decorah eaglets are growing up!!

-Well, not so little now.

-Since I started following them back in April, I've learned so much about eagles.

-Sadly, it is hard to distinguish one from the other because they look the same!

-But they are funny to watch, because they each have their own personalities.

-I'm putting The Carrie Diaries on my to-read list.

-Franny and Zooey, however, comes first.

-This summer, I'll be tackling the classics in books.

-My first swim of the summer.

-This is a couple of months old, but I love going back to this page so much I felt the need to share it.

-The other day I was on youtube and I found myself watching this creepy Japanese show featuring various characters' experiences with ghosts, possibly urban legends.

-Once I found them, I couldn't stop watching them, despite the language barrier. Some were weird, but never the less creepy. One involved a girl being chased by a disembodied head.

-That would scare anyone.

-Good thing I can't find them today!

-The job hunt continues.

-Well if I can't get a job in the next while, I shall continue working towards getting my drivers license.

-I wonder if things really do happen for a reason?

-Are certain things destined to be?

-That would make an interesting post.

-One step closer to independence!

-The thought's exciting, yet a bit nerve racking.

-I think I ate too much at dinner last night.

-Still felt the effects of it this morning, but I'm back to my usual ravenous self this afternoon.
